If you won a US$1.5 billion jackpot, or any jackpot for that matter, you wouldn’t want to miss the deadline for collecting your prize!

Unlike this lucky winner who managed to snag their sweet US$1.5 billion jackpot in the nick of time, other lottery winners were not so fortunate and ended up losing their entire prize. Here’s a list of the biggest unclaimed lottery tickets in history to remind you to make sure to keep your tickets safe and check them twice before throwing them away!

1. EuroMillions – £64 million – Hertfordshire, U.K.

1. EuroMillions - £64 million - Hertfordshire, U.K.

2. Powerball – US$77 million – Georgia, U.S.

3. Mega Millions – US$68 million – New York, U.S.

The story doesn’t end there though. An entire year later in 2003, a man by the name of Fritzner Bechette came forward to lottery officials claiming that he was the lucky winner from the previous year’s Christmas Eve Mega Millions draw. Fritzner filed a lawsuit in the Queens Supreme Court against the New York State Lottery saying that he’d been trying to claim his US$68 million jackpot prize since the day after the results were announced in December 2002. He consequently sued the New York Lottery for the US$63 million jackpot he lost (which officials clarified was US$68 million) plus interest, of course. His reason for not being able to claim it? His winning lottery ticket conveniently went missing in a “non-retrievable situation”. Sure.

Fun Fact

3 out of 4 of the unclaimed Mega Millions jackpot winning tickets were purchased in the New York boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. The prizes were worth US$68 millionUS$46 million and US$31 million. Coincidence? We’ll let you decide.

4. SuperLotto Plus - US$63 million – California, U.S.

4. SuperLotto Plus – US$63 million – California, U.S.

The second time he was contacted, instead of receiving his US$63 million jackpot prize, Lottery officials told him that a payout would be impossible due to the condition of the ticket. At the time of Milliner’s complaint, lottery officials said that they’d never received a claim from Milliner to begin with. They also said that after investigating the situation, they had found that Milliner’s ticket didn’t match the winning ticket whatsoever, as it was purchased on a different date and at a different 7-11 convenience store. Nice try though!

Even with all the evidence against him, Milliner is still adamant that the jackpot rightfully belongs to him. In 2017, he said in an interview that he will continue to pursue legal action in any way possible to get the jackpot that he claims is his. Unfortunately, this “unclaimed” lottery ticket will probably never find its rightful owner.

5. Lotto Max – C$70 million – Ontario, Canada

Well this is one way to set a record- the winning ticket for a C$70 million (US$52.85 million) Lotto Max jackpot eventually expired, making it the largest unclaimed prize in Canadian lottery history. Despite the fact that this winning ticket was purchased at a retailer in Scarborough, Ontario, it was never validated at an OLG lottery terminal. As part of its awareness campaign, the Ontario Lottery attempted to somehow prompt the owner of the ticket to come forward or perhaps jog their memory of it. Despite the fact that the winner may never see their C$70 million prize, OLG’s Customer Care Center received more than 1,100 calls from people who claimed they had lost the ticket due to the awareness campaign.

6. Powerball – US$51.7 million – Indiana, U.S.

7. Mega Millions – US$46 million – New York, U.S.

Either there’s a conspiracy or something in the water because some of the biggest unclaimed prizes seem to come from the state of New York! In this case, a very unlucky Brooklynite missed out on an extraordinary jackpot of US$46 million in a Mega Millions draw that took place on 25 April, 2006. In New York, unclaimed prize money is returned to the state’s prize pool. On occasion, unclaimed lottery prizes are used to subsidize prizes for larger jackpots, promotions and special one-time games.

8. Mega Millions – US$44 million – Florida, U.S.

An (un)lucky player from the state of Florida forfeited their early Christmas gift after their winning Mega Millions, purchased in a Kissimmee gas station for the 14 June 2023 draw, ticket expired on 11 December 2023.

While unfortunate for the unknowing winner, students in Florida and scored big! The state allocates 80% of the prize funds to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund, while the remaining 20% of the prize money is added back to the prize pool for the benefit of future winners.

9. Mega Millions – US$36 million – Florida, U.S.

Another Florida lottery player bites the dust! Just a few months after the US$44 million jackpot went unclaimed, another Mega Millions ticket sold in the Sunshine State expired on 11 February 2024.

On August 15 2023, a single ticketholder bought home more than just groceries from a Jacksonville supermarket – they also purchased a Mega Millions ticket worth US$36 million with the winning numbers 18 39 42 57 63, and the Mega Ball number was 7. Sadly, instead of ending the summer swimming in millions, they are most probably blissfully unaware of their missed winnings.

Why Billions in Prize Winnings Go Unclaimed Every Year

Why Billions in Prize Winnings Go Unclaimed Every Year

One of the most common reasons prizes go unclaimed is that when people see that they didn’t win the jackpot, they automatically assume they didn’t win any lottery prize. Even if you match only a few numbers, you’re still eligible for incredible secondary prizes! Also, when people see that somebody else won the jackpot, they are more likely to feel discouraged enough that they won’t even check if they won smaller prizes. We think this is a huge mistake because secondary prizes can be worth anywhere from thousands to millions!

Top 7 Best Lottery Ads Ever

1. Don’t Forget the Megaplier! – Texas Mega Millions Advert

Starting with something short and silly, here are two ads in one video that promoted Mega Millions in Texas, USA. While the ads may seem pretty goofy, they actually make important points about how much more money players can win when they add the optional Megaplier to their Mega Millions tickets.

2. Nicer Problems to Have – Funny EuroMillions Lottery Ads

On to another lighthearted one, the “Nicer Problems To Have” lottery advertisement campaign poked fun at the kinds of absurd problems new millionaires might face after playing EuroMillions and winning big.

All the adverts in this series are worth watching, but the best of the lot has to be this one in which a bumbling husband’s new indoor fountain breaks down with hilarious results.

3. You’re Beautiful – Musical National Lottery Advertisement Campaign

Continuing with more adverts from the UK, in 2015 the National Lottery created the #PleaseNotThem lottery advertisement campaign. This inspired ad campaign featured various British celebrities.

In the ads, celebrities make fun of themselves by explaining in detail all the ridiculous and self-centred things they would do if they won the lottery, such as creating television channels devoted to themselves or redesigning Stonehenge.

At the end of the commercials, the National Lottery encourages viewers to buy lottery tickets, because “anyone can win the lotto, please don’t let it be them.”

Of all the adverts in the series, our favourite has to be the one in which pop singer James Blunt plans to digitally insert himself into all mirrors in the UK so that he can sing “you’re beautiful” to millions of people.

4. Lost – Cryptic New Zealand Powerball Lottery Ad

This advert for the Powerball New Zealand may not be funny, but that’s because it’s not trying to be. Instead, this instant New Zealand favourite not only tells an incredibly dramatic story, it also contained a hidden game that gave sharp viewers the opportunity to win big.

If viewers were able to find the numbers hidden in the video, they could then enter them at the Lotto NZ website to win thousands in prizes. Sadly, the campaign is over so there’s no more prizes to be claimed, but it’s never too late to enjoy this brilliant ad!

5. Christmas Comes Early – Emotional Loteria de Navidad Short Film

Over the years, Spain’s Christmas raffle, Loteria de Navidad, has become famous for having the world’s largest prize pool. Recently, it’s also become famous for its amazing commercials. Spanish citizens are almost as excited for a new Loteria ad to come out as they are for the actual draw on the 22nd of December.

A classic Loteria de Navidad advert came out back in 2016 and takes place in a small Spanish fishing town. In it, an old woman sees the raffle draw on television and, not knowing it’s a rerun of a previous year’s draw, mistakenly believes she’s won the raffle.

When her son is not able to break the bad news to her, he decides to give her the experience of a lifetime and gathers the entire town for a touching celebration that’ll bring tears to your eyes.

6. “Go Island Shopping!” – Adorable Irish EuroMilions Advert

This advert may not be big and dramatic or have any celebrities or clues hidden inside of it, but what it does have quite a lot of is good old Irish charm.

Short, sweet, and to the point, this little advert encourages viewers to make use of their Irish luck and play for the EuroMillions jackpot for a chance to win enough money to go island shopping with!

7. Let It Snow – Best US Powerball Lottery Commercial

The US Powerball is known for having the largest record jackpot of all time so it’s no big surprise that it also has some of the best advertising.

That’s why we’re choosing to end with “Snowfall,” a beautiful little ad in which Powerballs fall from the California sky like — you guessed it — snow!

What will your lottery story be?

One thing connects all seven of these great ads: you can play their lotteries on TheLotter! No matter how far away the place, no matter how foreign the language, TheLotter makes it easy to play the world’s top lotteries online wherever you are.

Shaw had purchased his winning ticket at the Break Time convenience store where he works. In addition to replacing two missing front teeth, he planned to take his children to Disney World in Florida. “I can be with them as much as I want now,” Shaw said.

Mavis Wanczyk Powerball Winner of $758.7 Million Jackpot

Mavis Wanczyk, 53, was the sole winner of the Powerball’s $758.7 million prize – the second-highest lottery jackpot ever awarded at the time. The 23 August 2017 win was also the fourth-highest annuitized jackpot and cash value prize ever won by a single ticket.

Wanczyk’s winning ticket matched the five numbers and the Powerball selected in the draw: 6 – 7 – 16 – 23 – 26 / Powerball 4

Mavis Wanczyk, Powerball winner and ‘pipe dream come true’

“It’s just a pipe dream I’ve always had,” she told reporters. “It’s just a chance I had to take.”

Wanczyk chose to take the lump sum cash payment of the prize. After taxes, her check will amount to $336,350,655.

After learning she had won the jackpot, Wanczyk immediately quit her job at the Chicopee Medical Centre where she had worked for 32 years. She said she had purchased five tickets for the draw. Two of them were quick picks, but on one of the tickets she used numbers relating to family birthdays as well as 4, which is her lucky number.

After the draw, one of Wanczyk’s colleagues told her to check the numbers, and that she had won the jackpot. Wanczyk, who still appeared stunned when talking to reporters, said, “I couldn’t drive anywhere, I couldn’t do anything.”

When will Powerball set another jackpot record?

In addition to the jackpot prize, 34 Powerball players became instant millionaires in the draw by winning the $1 million Match 5 prize. And on top of that, 6 players won a $2 million prize by matching the five main numbers and including the Power Play option when they purchased their tickets. Over all, there were 9,397,723 other players who won non-jackpot prizes totalling $134,981,575.

Who Plays the Lottery More, Men or Women?

“Males have higher levels of lottery play than females”

In 2010, the Journal of Gambling Studies published a survey that reviewed gambling habits and lottery game play. The survey found, as could be expected, that the poor are more likely to buy lottery tickets than people who don’t have to worry about their finances. A second study in that same journal, published two years later, found that that lottery play was higher among minority groups and people in the lowest socioeconomic status levels.

What Cars Do Lottery Winners Buy?

Cars winners

Keep in mind, it isn’t only about numbers. We’ve included cases of lottery winners who have a unique story behind the wheels they bought. So fasten your seatbelts – it’s about to get crazy!

Statistical Data of 3 National Lotteries

The United Kingdom National Lottery

According to the stats, these winners purchased more than 17,000 cars at an average price of US$73,000! The most frequently purchased cars are Land Rovers, followed by Audi cars in second place. German cars appear to be the most popular choice of lotter winners as you can see in the list.

This is the final list of the top 10 most popular cars purchased by the winning millionaires in the UK according to the results of the National Lottery survey.

  1. Land Rover (England)
  2. Audi (Germany)
  3. Jaguar (England)
  4. Mercedes-Benz (Germany)
  5. Ford (United States)
  6. BMW (Germany)
  7. Peugeot (France)
  8. Porsche (Germany)
  9. Toyota (Japan)
  10. Vauxhall (England)

Veikkaus Oy

What cars do lottery winners buy in Finland? The Helsinki-based lottery operator Veikkaus organized its own survey among lottery millionaires in Finland. Veikkaus surveyed players who won a minimum of €500,000 between 2007-2017. The survey began on 8 December 2017 and was completed in January 2018. A total of 155 winners were surveyed. The responses were completely anonymous and the responses were received in a manner that would not reveal the winners’ identities.

  1. Audi (Germany)
  2. Mercedes-Benz (Germany)
  3. Nissan (Japan)
  4. Volvo (Sweden)
  5. Volkswagen (Germany)
  6. BMW (Germany)
  7. Renault (France)
  8. Toyota (Japan)
  9. Suzuki (Japan)
  10. Citroen (France)
Winner's cars

What’s interesting about the Finnish survey is that Porsche, Land Rover, and Jaguar didn’t make it into the top 10. They were on the UK list, but maybe Finnish lottery players think (and spend money) differently.

Interestingly enough, famous luxury brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini didn’t make either list!

The National Lottery of Ireland

  • 27.5% said that their first purchase with their lottery winnings would be their dream car
  • E32.5% of respondents said that Ferrari is their dream car. 27.5% preferred Mercedes-Benz, and 15% chose Audi
  • Only 5% said they would quit their jobs
  • Speaking of their winning numbers, 42% won with randomly chosen numbers, while 37.5% used birthdays

Multi-Million Dollar Lessons in Politeness

  • Lottery winners are not all alike. In 2007, Petra L. won €15.28 million in the German National Lottery, but instead of indulging in a luxury vehicle, Petra purchased a small compact car. She bought a Fiat Panda, reportedly worth just US$10,000. Commenting on the purchase, she said she wanted a simple car with an airbag instead of spending her money on luxuries.Would you have done the same?
  • Simon Fagan from Castlebellingham, Ireland, won big in the Ireland Lotto back in May 2013. He won £3.6 million and used a small bit of the money to buy a secondhand Kia. The car had 150,000 km on it at the time of the purchase. Simon told reporters he had no plans to move out of his parents’ house, either.
  • Derry Ryan Magee won £6.4 million in the EuroMillions lottery. His first purchase was a £170,000 Ferrari. Soon after, Derry’s life changed drastically. First he got divorced, then he received 13 traffic tickets, then he crashed the Ferrari, had his driving license confiscated, and was given a court sentence of 200 hours of community service. Derry just might need another lottery win to rebuild his life after all this!
  • Can you imagine driving a different car each day of the week? That’s exactly what 1 lucky UK Lotto winner did. Tom Naylor scooped up a £15.5 million jackpot back in 2001. The self-proclaimed car lover bought 7 cars, one of every day! On Mondays, he drives a V8 Mustang, on Tuesdays, it’s a Jaguar XJR, on Wednesdays, he hops in a Jaguar XJ220, a Jaguar F-Type is for Thursdays, a limited edition Aston Martin DB9 for Fridays (James Bond would be so proud), another Aston Martin DB9 for Saturdays and a Land Rover Discovery for Sundays or for shopping. Who could keep up?

Is Friday the 13th a Lucky Day to Play the Lottery?

What are the Origins of Friday the 13th?

There are many theories going back centuries as to how the fear of Friday the 13th came about. This infamous day has deep roots in western culture, including Christian theology and Norse mythology.

The number thirteen is significant in Christianity as it’s the number of people who were present at the Last Supper (Jesus and his twelve apostles). Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th member of the party to arrive. Friday was also the day when Jesus was said to have been crucified by the Romans.

Norse mythology has a story similar to Christianity’s Last Supper – including the unlucky number of dinner guests. Odin, the god of war, invited 11 other gods to a party. Loki the god of mischief and chaos did not take very well to being uninvited and decided to make a surprise appearance. Consequently, a fight ensued, and Baldur, the god of love and Thor’s brother was killed. While we don’t know if this party took place on a Friday, this legend did turn 13 into an unlucky number across Scandinavia.

Today, you can find apartment buildings, hotels, and skyscrapers with no 13th floor, street addresses that skip from 12 to 14, and some airports with no 13th gate.

Friday 13th

Are there Other Unlucky Days You Should Know About?

Like other western countries, Italians fear Friday due to the connection to Jesus’s death. However, the number 17 has been considered unlucky since the days of the Roman empire when it was written as the roman numeral XVII. This could be changed anagrammatically to VIXI, reminding Italians of the Latin language phrase that translates to “I have lived“, which can also be understood as, “My life is over“. With this explanation in mind, we think it’s totally understandable why some would refrain from testing their luck!

If we head east, it’s the number 4 that causes worry when scheduling big events like celebrations or business openings. In Chinese and Japanese, the number 4 is considered unlucky because the sound of the word is very similar to the word for death.

Insane Lotteries and Crazy Lotteries – We Can’t Make This Up!

The Bacon Lottery

This one is not for vegetarians! They called this scratch-off lottery game “Bringin’ Home the Bacon” and it was offered in 2015 by the Hoosier Lottery in Indiana. Can you imagine bacon-scented lottery tickets? The Indiana lottery sold them at $2 a ticket, giving players a chance to win $250 worth of bacon once a year for 20 years.

Actually, Indiana was not the first state with a taste for bacon. The New Hampshire Lottery also sold scratch-and-sniff bacon-flavoured lottery tickets, which apparently were quite popular!

Vegetarians, is there is hope? The Colorado Lottery once sold scratch-and-sniff tickets in scents of coffee, chocolate, and bouquet. According to officials there, these tickets were among the lottery’s worst sellers.

The Sex Lottery

In 2014, Forget Dinner, a UK dating site, organised a Sex Lottery. Thousands of men and women signed up for a chance to win a dirty weekend in Brighton! Yes, the top prize was a one-night stand on the English seaside with a complete stranger. The lucky winners got an all-inclusive package for two in the Pelirocco Hotel. The suite had a mirror above the bed, and a Pole Dancing Area. That’s what we would call hitting the jackpot!

The Pope’s Lottery

While some Catholic Church officials have stated that lottery draws are “immoral” and a form of “idol worship”, the Governatorate of Vatican City State runs an annual lottery to raise money for charity.

According to an official press release issued in November 2016, the funds collected in the 4th annual lottery for Pope Francis’ charities would assist those affected by the earthquakes that struck central Italy in late 2016, and also aid the homeless.

Apparently you don’t even have to travel to the Vatican to purchase tickets! You can purchase them online, officials said. The drawing was held in February 2017. We’re saying our prayers for the next one!

The Speed Camera Lottery

How do you get drivers to slow down and obey speed limits? Enter them in a lottery draw if they’re good drivers. An idea suggested by Keith Richardson won Volkswagen’s The Fun Theory, a contest for ideas to make obeying speed limits fun. And then just a year later, his idea became a reality in Sweden. Introducing the Speed Camera Lottery!

Cameras on Sweden’s roads take photographs of assing drivers. If you happen to drive according to the speed limit, you were entered into the lottery. Cash prizes funded by drivers who paid fines for speeding!

Was the Speed Camera Lottery successful? According to the Swedish National Society for Road Safety, 22% more drivers than usual stick to the speed limit now and the average car speed dropped from 32 to 25 km/h! We’re going to drive carefully from now on!

The Tax Lottery

Do you pay your taxes in Poland? If so, you could win a prize! In October 2015, the Polish Finance Ministry launched the “National Receipt Lottery”. Polish citizens were asked to mail in their VAT receipts for a chance to win a new car.

Poland introduced this lottery as an incentive for Poles to ask for receipts when purchasing goods and services. Other prizes offered in the lottery were laptops and tablets.

Poland was actually not the first country to launch a tax lottery. Similar lotteries in Portugal and Slovakia were reportedly huge successes! Participating in this lottery shouldn’t be all that taxing!
