In 1812 the name was changed to its current La Primitiva. The lottery was eventually abolished in 1862 and was only reestablished by the Organismo Nacional de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (ONLAE) in August 1985, more than a century later.

The Spanish National Lottery allocates 55% of the ticket revenue towards prizes while the rest is contributed towards state programs and charities, such as the Red Cross and the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

How to Play

Spain La Primitiva has a 6/49 format, meaning players must select six numbers from a guess range of 1-49, as well as one Reintegro number from a range of 0-9. The Reintegro, or Refund number, has two functions. In addition to creating the 6+R jackpot prize, players who match it regardless of if they match any other winning number, are entitled to a full refund on the cost of their La Primitiva lottery ticket.

In addition to the Reintegro number, another bonus ball, called Complementario (Complimentary), is added, creating the third 5+1+R third prize division and the 5+1 fourth prize division.

The La Primitiva top prize starts at €5 million and is known to have numerous rollovers before being won. The jackpot record of €101.7 million was won in October 2015 after a total of 56 rollovers! While it started out as a monthly draw, due to popular demand it was decided that El Gordo draws would become a weekly affair.

To participate in an El Gordo lottery draw, players must select 5 main numbers from a range of 1-54 as well as one Numero Clave, between 0-9. The Numero Clave is needed to win the jackpot prize and is also used to give players who match it a full refund on the cost of their El Gordo ticket.

Spain BonoLoto

BonoLoto was created by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado in 1988 to give Spanish lottery fans a cost-effective playing option. This lottery, while having smaller prizes as a result of the lower ticket costs, routinely hands out jackpots due to the low range and daily draws every Monday through Sunday at 21:30 Spain time.

How to play

To win the Bonoloto jackpot prize, players must match 6 numbers from a guess range of 1-49. At the draw, a seventh bonus number called Complementario (Complimentary) is drawn and used to create the lottery’s secondary 5+1 prize category. Unlike the other lotteries on our list, the BonoLoto jackpot is won by only matching the 6 main numbers.

Just like Spain La Primitiva, Bonoloto features a Reintegro number which is randomly assigned to all Bonoloto lottery tickets upon purchase. If your ticket matched the Reintegro number drawn, regardless of if you matched any of the winning numbers, you’ll receive a full refund on the cost of your ticket.

What is the “Reintegro” Number?

The Reintegro, or refund number, features in all Spanish lotteries. This bonus number is used to refund the player the cost of their lottery ticket. At every lottery draw, 10%, an estimated €1.4 million, is put aside to pay for the ticket refunds. The Reintegro consists of one number from a range of 0-9. La Primitiva and El Gordo allow you to choose your own Reintegro number, while BonoLoto automatically assigns a random Reintegro number to your ticket. After the main numbers are drawn, the Reintegro number is selected from a separate drum. If you match the Reintegro with any other winning number or even alone, you’re entitled to a full refund of the cost of your lottery ticket. There’s a good chance you’ll be getting your money back too, as the odds of matching the Reintegro number are 1 in 10! In La Primitiva and El Gordo draws, the Reintegro number also serves as one of the numbers needed to win the jackpot prize.

There is a similar extra number In the El Gordo lottery. In addition to the five main numbers, you also choose an additional Numero Clave number from a range of 0-9. This extra number is drawn from a separate drum. To win the El Gordo jackpot, you must match the five main numbers as well as the Numero Clave. Partial matches of the main numbers as well as the Numero Clave may entitle you to a secondary prize. Matching only the Numero Clave will entitle you to a refund of the cost of your lottery ticket, less TheLotter’s service fee.

Outside of Spanish lotteries, Portugal also offers a similar feature called Número da Sorte, or Lucky Number. The History of Lotteries in Spain – A National Tradition

Spain set up the Royal Lottery as a charity in 1763 during the reign of King Carlos III. The game was called “Lottery by Numbers” and was the predecessor to the modern La Primitiva. Around half a century later in 1811 during the Spanish War of Independence, The Royal National Lottery of Spain was established along with a new game called Modern Lottery as a way of collecting funds to the public treasury without imposing a new tax on the people. When Did the Spanish Christmas Lottery Start?

The Spanish raffle, officially Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad, held its first draw in Cadiz on 18 December 1812. Draws first took place in Madrid in 1814. The name Sorteo de Navidad has been in use since 1892. The raffle continued without interruption during the years of the Spanish Civil War, but the draws took place in Valencia. In the past, drawings took place in the Lotería Nacional hall in Madrid. In the years 2010 and 2011, drawings were held at the Palacio Municipal de Congresos de Madrid, and since 2012 they have taken place in Madrid’s Teatro Real.

Before being broadcast on television, the Spanish Christmas Raffle was followed on live radio and results could only be viewed in the cinema. The Spanish Christmas Lottery prints 100,000 tickets (billetes) with five-digit codes ranging from 00000-99999. Due to the game’s popularity, each ticket is printed in 203 copies, called a series. The Unique History of Japanese Lotteries

Lottery games go back centuries in Japan! One of the earliest records was in 1624 where it was written that visitors to a temple in the province of Settsu, current-day Osaka, would place a wooden tablet with their name written on it into a box between New Year’s Day and 7 January. On the 7th of January, a monk would choose three tablets from the box and give each of the winners an amulet for happiness and good fortune. Similar lottery games were staged throughout the Edo Period as a way for temples and shrines to obtain funds to repair and maintain their facilities.

As the practice became more popular, and private companies started staging lottery games as well, the Shogunate government repeatedly issued bans on lotteries as they “swayed the human heart”, or made the public materialistic. However, the financially unstable government, was unable to provide assistance for temples and shrines, forcing them to permit the selling of lottery tickets. In 1842 the ruling Tenpo government totally outlawed the practice for the next  103 years.

Japan’s modern lottery system launched in October 1945, three months after the end of World War II to prevent post-war inflation. In 1948, every prefecture was allowed to establish their own local lottery to raise money for the reconstruction of the devastation caused by the war. As the economic situation continued to recover, Japan launched the national lottery, Takerakuji, in 1954 which was played alongside four other regional lotteries. It was only in the late 1980s when the number-select lotteries we’re familiar with came to Japan, with Mini Loto launching in 1999, Loto 6 in 2000, and Loto 7 in 2013.

Through the centuries, lotteries have remained an indispensable way of aiding and maintaining prefectures across Japan without raising taxes on the people. EuroMillions Superdraw History

2007 – The EuroMillions Superdraw was introduced on 9 February 2007. The first draw had nine participating countries – France, Spain, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Switzerland. The boosted starting jackpot of €100 million was won in its entirety by a single player from Belgium.

2014 – The Superdraw jackpot offered on 3 October 2014 rolled over six times and was the first EuroMillions jackpot to ever reach the €190 million cap. It was won on 24th October by a single ticket purchased in Portugal.

2016 – The first EuroMillions Superdraw of 2016 took place on 30 September and introduced an increased starting jackpot of €130 million (instead of €100 million) and a change to the game format (12 Lucky Stars instead of 11).

2020 – Four EuroMillions Superdraws were staged in 2020. The last draw of the year was held on 20 November 2020 and reached EuroMillions’ new €200 million jackpot cap before it was won by a single player from France on 11 December 2020. This win meant that the next maximum jackpot would be increased to €210 million.

2021 – The EuroMillions Superdraw on 5 February 2021 broke all European records when the boosted jackpot reached the lottery’s €210 million cap on 26 February 2021. Just a few months later, in a Superdraw series that started on 24 September 2021 and culminated with a jackpot win on 15 October 2021, EuroMillions set a new record. A single ticket captured the entire €220 million jackpot, and as a result, the jackpot cap was boosted to €230 million.

2022 – On 4 February 2022, EuroMillions offered a boosted jackpot of €130 million that was matched in the first draw by a single player from the UK. The second Superdraw, which started on 17 June 2022,  jackpot reached the €230 million cap on 19 July, and was also won by a UK ticketholder. This EuroMillions jackpot broke three records: EuroMillions, UK, and European! Just three months later, a €193 million jackpot was won on 23 September 2022 by a single ticket sold in the UK. This marked the third consecutive Superdraw win by a UK player!

2023 – The EuroMillions draw on December 8, 2023. With no winners emerging from the series that began on the previous week, the €200 million jackpot, which was boosted by the EuroMillions Superdraw rolled over until it eventually reached €240 million. This astounding prize was finally claimed by a single ticket holder from Austria. With the jackpot cap reaching a new peak, it was increased to €250 million for future draws.
