Myth #1: It is more likely that you will be struck by lightning than win the lottery.

You’ve probably heard this one before – this is the most commonly cited lottery myth. Yet, it is not exactly true. Let’s consider the statistics. According to the US National Weather Service, the odds of a person being struck by lightning in their lifetime are 1 in 600,000. At face value, it would indeed seem that you have a greater chance of being hit by lightning than beating the 1 in 292 million odds to win the US Powerball jackpot.

Yet, this myth was debunked back in 1996 by Iowa Lottery commissioner Ed Stanek. Stanek pointed out that in 1995, 1,136 people won a million dollars or more playing North American lotteries compared with only 91 who were killed by lightning. Stanek noted that Powerball is not an “all or nothing” game and players can win small amounts even if they match only some of the numbers in a draw. The bottom line suggests that it would not be wise to go outside during a lightning storm but to play the lottery instead.

Myth #2: The lottery is a form of taxation on the poor.

This is a serious, frequently mentioned criticism of lotteries. Critics call the lottery a “regressive tax” and say that lottery players tend to have lower income and to be less well educated than non-players.

For example, the odds of winning the Austria Lotto are 1:8,145,060 but as a result, jackpots in that lottery tend to be quite small in comparison.

Myth #6: Winning a large prize more than once is impossible.

It is said that lottery luck only strikes once, but this statement is not based in reality. There have been many remarkable stories about players who have scored more than one amazing lottery prize. One example is English couple David and Kathleen Long who won £1 million in the EuroMillions lottery twice in two years.

Another example is that of the Carmichaels from Arizona. The couple won US$2.5 million playing the Arizona State Lottery in 1995 and then scored a US$1 million win in 2013.

As a result, the Powerball jackpot became much harder to win and jackpots grew larger and larger. The Powerball rules change led to the record US$1.58 billion jackpot split between three winning tickets in January 2016. Mega Millions changed its rules in October 2017 making it more difficult than before to win that lottery’s jackpot.

Myth #8: Lottery play leads to compulsive gambling.

Here again is a very serious charge against lottery play, but actually there’s little evidence to support it. According to the National Survey on Gambling Behavior conducted by the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center, “it does not appear that the availability of a lottery has an impact on (problem gambling) prevalence rates.”

Similarly, a study of ‘Lottery Playing, Gambling Addiction and Links to Compulsive Consumption’ from 1990 stated that its findings “do not support the claim that lotteries create addictive gamblers.”

Can Stefan Mandel’s Method Guarantee a Lottery Win?

Economist Stefan Mandel was trying to find a way to get his family out of then-communist Romania when he came up with a plan to win the lottery. He determined that if he bought tickets with certain blocks of numbers, he could guarantee a second-place win. Two friends went in with him and the small group won 72,783 Romanian leu, an amount equivalent at the time to about 18 years of salary.

Mandel moved to Israel before settling in Australia. There he perfected a plan to buy every single number combination in a lottery draw, guaranteeing a jackpot win. He found investors to join him on the scheme and during the 1980s, his syndicate won 12 times.

Mandel set his sights on the Virginia Lottery, with its small guess range. He raised millions from investors and when the Virginia Lottery’s jackpot hit US$27 million on 12 February 1992, Mandel’s syndicate used computers and laser printers to produce tickets with every number combination. The group shipped the tickets to Virginia and over 5 million were processed in time for the draw.

Mandel’s International Lotto Fund syndicate won the jackpot and US$900,000 in secondary prizes. His win was so controversial that the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the FBI investigated. It turned out that everything Mandel did was perfectly legal, and the group collected the winnings.

Since that time, laws have been enacted in the United States preventing the possible purchase of every possible number combination in a lottery draw.

Mandel tried to start his own lottery in 1993, went bankrupt in 1995, and was convicted of fraud in Israel in 2003. Today he lives on a remote tropical island in Vanuatu where he says he has “retired” from the lottery.

Does Richard Lustig’s Book Offer a Winning Lottery Method?

With seven big lottery wins and dozens of smaller prizes under his belt, Richard Lustig claimed to have developed a method for increasing one’s chances of winning the lottery. “Luck has nothing to do with it,” he said.

Lustig won US$10,000 on a scratchcard ticket in 1993 but bigger wins would follow. In January 2002 he won US$842,151 playing Florida Mega Money; in November 2008 he won US$73,658 playing Florida Fantasy 5; and in August 2010 he won US$98,992, again playing Fantasy 5.

The 7-time lottery winner published a book about his personal lottery gaming strategies called Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery, which was ranked #3 on Amazon’s self-help book list in 2013. In the book, Lustig detailed his “winning lottery method.”

“I don’t guarantee or make promises to anybody that by following my method you’re going to win the lottery,” Lustig said in an ABC News report following his impressive winning streak. “I’m not a scam artist. I’m telling people exactly the truth — that they will definitely increase their chances of winning” using his lottery method.

Lustig told readers to avoid Quick-Pick computer-generated number selection and recommended using the same numbers repeatedly, until they won a prize.

One of Lustig’s other key strategies is reinvesting winnings towards the next win. In other words, the more tickets, the higher your odds of winning. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand the more you play the better chances you have of winning,” Lustig said.

Although his book may have sold quite a few copies, it certainly didn’t guarantee winnings to those who bought it. Lustig has since died but you can take a chance at winning the lottery by playing Mega Millions or one of our other exciting lotteries!

Can You Hack the Lottery Odds with Math?

Marge and Jerry Selbee from Michigan “figured out how to hack the odds in a certain type of lottery,” Inc.com reported in March 2008. Over a nine-year period, the Selbees’ “estimated total lottery haul was almost US$27 million.”

The couple played Winfall in Michigan and later Cash Winfall in Massachusetts, two lottery draw games with something in common. When their jackpots reached a certain amount, and there was no winner in a draw, the jackpot prize money rolled down and was distributed to winners in the next highest prize category. Knowing in advance when the jackpot would reach that specific amount determined the optimal time to play the lottery and buying a large quantity of tickets in that draw significantly increased the odds of winning prizes.

“A roll-down happened every six weeks or so, and it was a big deal, announced by the Michigan Lottery ahead of time as a marketing hook, a way to bring bettors into the game, and sure enough, players increased their bets on roll-down weeks, hoping to snag a piece of the jackpot,” according to an article on Huffpost. What Selbee realized, “doing some mental arithmetic, was that a player who waited until the roll-down stood to win more than he lost, on average, as long as no player that week picked all six numbers.”

To make their system work, the Selbees needed to go to stores in person and stand for hours in front of the machines printing out the massive amount of tickets they purchased. And then they had to save the tickets, check for winners, and claim their prizes. Over the years, they would buy hundreds of thousands of tickets every roll-down week.

The Selbees were not the only ones who discovered this “mathematical loophole” in lottery rules. A group of students from MIT had also figured out the odds, formed an organization, attracted investors, and started making millions, according to reports in The Atlantic Not only that, the MIT group found a way to force a roll-down of the jackpot money even before the state lottery had a chance to announce that it would happen. This was possible due to faults in the lottery’s rules at the time.

After the Boston Globe reported on the high-volume lottery purchases, the Massachusetts Inspector General reviewed the Lottery’s Cash WinFall game. He concluded that while the Lottery failed to establish proper rules to manage high-volume betting, it actually profited and encouraged the practice because it provided a financial benefit to the state. The game was discontinued in January 2012.

Let’s go behind-the-scenes to understand how lotteries work and the process that gives each of us a fair and equal chance of winning one of the world’s biggest jackpots.

Different Types of Lottery Draw Machines

The lottery draw machine is the crux of the lottery draw. It is imperative for lotteries to invest in equipment that will ensure a completely random outcome. This is why lottery draw machines can cost as much as $55,000 each! Draw machines come in different shapes and sizes, but the mechanical machines are generally used in the lottery world. There are two types of mechanical lottery machines – gravity-pick and air-mix machines.

Gravity Pick Lottery Machine

This is the most commonly used lottery machine, as it is seen as being the most fair and secure. It is used in major lotteries such as Mega Millions, Powerball, Canada Lotto 649,and EuroMillions.

This type of machine has a drum with spinning paddles/arms that rotate in opposite directions. The balls, which are usually made of rubber, are dropped into the spinning chamber from a set of transparent tubes above the machine. The paddles mix the balls and then the requisite number of balls pass out of the bottom of the drum, one at a time. They travel through a transparent tube and into a visible tray, so that viewers can see the balls at all times. There is an optical sensor that tracks each ball that passes through, allowing only the right number of balls to be released.

Air-Mix Lotto Machine

The air-mix lottery draw machine chamber is filled with numbered ping-pong balls. These balls are whirled around the drum by jets of air from a fan that is located at the bottom of the drum. Each of these balls has been measured to ensure that they are all equal in weight and size. The winning balls shoot up and out of the chamber through a tube, ending up in a display tray. This type of machine is mainly for ‘pick 3’ or ‘pick 4’ games, and is also used in some big lotteries, including the EuroJackpot lotto and the Italian SuperEnalotto lottery.

Now that we have an understanding of the equipment that is used in a typical lottery draw, we can explore the lottery draw process of three of the world’s biggest lotteries:

Mega Security for Mega Millions

Mega Millions draws are conducted at WSB-TV studio, which is located in Atlanta, Georgia. The draws happen every Tuesday and Friday at 23:00 EST.

Security is paramount for each and every Mega Millions draw. The lottery machines and the ball sets are stored in a secure location, and can be accessed only by approved draw officials. The lotto machines are chosen at random and the selection is verified by external auditors. This is to confirm, according to the chosen machine and balls, that each number has the same odds of being drawn.

Mega Millions also uses two separate machines per draw, each with its own ball set. One is used to select the main numbers and the other is to select the Mega Ball. Both machines and ball sets are tested to ensure 100% randomness of the draw. Even after the draw, more tests are conducted as a part of the verification procedure. All of the tests are administered by two Mega Millions draw officials as well as one person from a third-party auditor. As if all this is not enough in terms of security, each step in the pre-draw process is videotaped. From start to finish, the entire pre-draw procedure takes about 3 hours.

The Power Behind a U.S. Powerball Lottery Draw

U.S. Powerball has two lottery ball machines per draw – one for the main numbers and one to draw the Power Ball. All of the machines used in a Powerball draw are gravity-pick machines, even though they resemble air-mix machines in appearance.

The balls begin their journey in a series of clear tubes above the drum. When the game begins, the tubes release the balls into the chamber. The machines have spinning paddles at the bottom of the drum, which spin the balls randomly around the chamber. Random balls will then shoot up through a tube that is in the middle of the drum. These balls will travel outside and around the drum through a transparent tube, landing up in a clearly visible display area.

There are two different ball sets used in each Powerball lottery draw – white balls for the main drum and red balls for the Power Ball drum. Each ball is made of solid rubber and weighs 80g. The cost per ball is $60 and each ball will last for approximately 2-3 years. The balls used are weighed regularly to ensure that there is negligible weight difference.

In just a matter of minutes, the lucky numbers are drawn, with viewers unaware of all the careful preparation that has just occurred.

An Inside Look at the UK National Lottery

The UK Lotto is operated by the Camelot Group and is regulated by the National Lottery Commission.

Just as in the two American multi-state lotteries, the UK National Lottery draws are monitored by an independent auditor, who verifies that each and every draw is conducted according to procedure and that each draw is completely random.

The ‘Draw Manager’, who is an employee of Camelot, is responsible for the start of the draw. This person ensures that the draw runs smoothly. Also, members of the National Lottery Compliance team are present at a minimum of one Wednesday, one Friday and one Saturday draw each quarter.

The machines and ball sets are sealed and stored in a secure area after each draw. Access to the equipment is extremely restricted. Before each and every draw, these seals are examined to ensure that they have not been opened. The National Measurement Office tests each ball set and draw machine on a regular basis.

The draw machine and ball set are selected randomly before the draw. The names of the options are placed in envelopes, which are shuffled, and then an independent third-party selects an envelope. The UK National Lottery has 13 draw machines in operation, so, for each draw, one of these machines will be randomly selected.

Each of the machines has its own name. The first six names are from the legend of King Arthur, drawing from the name of the UK National Lottery Operator, Camelot. These machines are Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, Vyvyan, and Galahad. The other seven draw machines are named after gemstones, each of which has its own unique characteristics and symbolism.
